SAN JOSE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT I. Library Textbook Clerk II. Definition Under general supervision, to do a variety of moderately difficult clerical work in the ordering, processing, and circulation of school library materials; to take charge of a school textbook depository, issue textbooks to students and maintain accurate textbook inventory records; and to do related work as required III. Examples of Duties Types requisitions for library books and magazines; types catalog cards for new books, files catalog cards and shelf list cards; assigns accession numbers to new books and periodically types new acquisitions lists; takes charge of circulation desk and checks library books, magazines, and other supplies in and out to students; assists students in making use of library facilities; types monthly list of overdue books and prepares slips notifying students of overdue books; assists Librarian in supervising student library assistants doing routine clerical work in the processing of library materials and orderly maintenance of the library facilities; maintains library records and types various forms and reports; types orders for school textbooks, maps, tests, globes, and other instructional materials; checks items received for textbook depository against purchase order to insure proper items are received; supervises students and personally types cards for new textbooks and other instructional materials and stamps books with school stamp; receives orders for textbooks from teachers, checks textbooks out to students and keeps records of books issued by student names; insures that textbooks are returned and notifies school office of lost books or books not returned by students; types lists of books to be discarded; maintains textbook depository in a neat, orderly condition; takes periodic inventory of textbooks and other instructional materials and keeps accurate records of these materials. IV. Distinguishing Characteristics V. Employment Standards A. Knowledge of: Clerical procedures associated with receiving, sorting, circulating, and maintaining accurate inventory records of textbooks and other instructional materials; Basic library terminology and standard library practices; Clerical office methods and standard office machines. B. Ability to: Learn the basic use of the library classification system; Perform simple reference work in assisting students and teachers in the use of library facilities; Receive, store, issue, and maintain accurate inventory records of textbooks and other instructional materials; Understand and follow oral and written directions; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, and other persons contacted in the course of work; Type at a speed of 30 words per minute. C. Education/Training/Experience: Completion of the twelfth grade and one year of clerical experience, preferably including clerical library experience. D. Licenses/Certificates: VI.
