Job Summary
Position is to direct the special education efforts for a 300-student charter middle school based on a whole-child model, complete with strong academics, outdoor education, meditation, counseling, social justice curriculum, regular community events and more. Director/teacher will lead a small team, coordinate with contracted outside services, and work closely with a friendly close-knit staff. Spanish preferred but not necessary.

POSTION TITLE: Director of Special Education / Education Specialist
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director of Special Education will oversee one other education specialist while also teaching our students with disabilities in the five core classes (English language arts, math, history, social justice and science) at a charter middle school catering to the whole child. Most of the learning takes place in the general classroom setting, with some students in a small group setting when necessary.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Assumes responsibility for the special education needs at a school of 300 students, while also overseeing one other education specialist
2. Facilitates IEP meetings with parents, students, teachers, and other specialists
3. Writes compliant IEP for students with disabilities using SEIS and works with them to achieve their goals and make significant gains
4. Assesses students for learning disabilities for initial and triennial IEPs and administers standardized assessments while following testing accommodations and modifications for students with IEPs/504s
5. Maintains special education records
6. Co-teaches with general education teachers and aides in the classroom and to maintain the accommodations and modifications of students with disabilities
7. Maintains open communication with general education teachers, staff, and parents about progress of students
8. Tutors students and works with student groups in a supportive, nurturing, respectful and helpful manner
9. Works with students with learning and/or behavioral differences
10. Uses a wide variety of instructional materials, both digital and non-digital.
Prepares for and assists with various classroom curriculums
11. Assists in the preparation of graphic and written teaching materials
12. Attends and participates in staff meetings and trainings
13. Performs other related duties as assigned
14. Ensuring full compliance with legal requirements under state and federal special education laws
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Special Education credential (mild to moderate); bilingual (Spanish) preferred but not required
