SENIOR MAINTENANCE WORKER
DEFINITION
Under general supervision, regularly performs a variety of maintenance crafts duties on various repair work orders assigned; performs minor electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and heating and ventilation repairs; performs numerous specialized, semi-skilled tasks; generally assists journeyman craftsmen on major or technical projects; and does related work as required.
Representative Duties
Replaces glass in doors and windows; repairs cabinets an cabinet hardware; moves, removes, and installs demountable walls and partitions; repairs wood doors, furniture, and chairs; patches plaster walls; patches roof leaks, makes minor plumbing and electrical repairs; performs maintenance painting, carpentry, masonry, heating and ventilation, and similar work in the repair of walls, floors, ceilings, mechanical systems, and similar building surfaces, areas, and facilities.
Assist journeyman craftsman on major alteration, construction, or repair projects; assists in purchasing and pickup of materials and supplies; assembles materials and tools needed; drives trucks and other light equipment; operates powered hand tools and shop equipment.
Often works independently on these types of repairs, but may work as a member of a crew.
Organizational Responsibilities
Positions in this Class are given assignments by a Supervisor or Lead position, and may be assigned to assist journeyman craftsman or work alone on repair assignments.
Training and Experience
Equivalent to: Two years of general construction and maintenance repair experience in one or more of the building trades; or completion of an approved apprenticeship program in one of the building trades.
Knowledge and Abilities
Practical working knowledge of: the methods, practices’ equipment’ and tools used in repair work in the building trades, such as glazing, hardware, carpentry, painting, concrete, plumbing, electrical, welding, and/or mechanical repair; work safety procedures; materials and terms used in the building trades.
Ability to
Use hand and power tools and some shop equipment with skill and safety; receive repair requests and translate them into practical and completed form; read and interpret working drawings, plans, and simple blueprints; follow oral and written directions; handle a variety of work orders and complete work on schedule; maintain effective working relationships with administrative, teaching, classified staff.
Licenses
A valid California Driver’s License.

- This type of work may involve ascending and descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps, and will involve walking or standing for extended periods of time.
- This type of work may require the mobility to stand, stoop, reach and bend. Positions in this class require mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects.
- Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate equipment and use hand tools, and handling and working with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.
- Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by weather may occasionally be experienced.
- Incumbents may be required to work with harsh or abrasive substances.
- Incumbents may be required to be on call for emergencies.
- Positions in this class perform work which involves the frequent lifting, pushing and/or pulling of objects which may approximate 75 pounds and may occasionally weigh up to 100 pounds.
