CLASS TITLE:                                    SCHOOL BUS DRIVER

Characteristics of the Class:

Under supervision of the Director of Maintenance and Operations/Transportation, drives a school bus to transport pupils to and from school, and on special authorized field study trips; performs other related and miscellaneous duties, as required or directed.

Requires complete responsibility for:  the efficient and safe operation of the school bus over designated routes, as assigned, and on officially authorized field study trips; the safety, conduct and discipline of school children while enroute, boarding, and alighting.

Examples of Duties:

1.            Drives a school bus over a number of designated and prescheduled routes, showing the name of and time at each stop, picks up pupils at each stop; transports pupils to and from school; supervises pupils enroute; maintains accurate stop-by-stop schedules as shown on printed route sheet; requests permission to make route or time changes, as deemed necessary.

2.            Similarly, drives bus on authorized field study trips.

3.            Keeps bus neat, clean and orderly.

4.            Performs custodial duties as assigned.

Desired Qualifications:

(a)            Training and Experience:  Completion of four years high school, including or supplemented by special courses and training in the mechanical phases, safe bus operation, and supplemented by practical experience in the operation of buses and/or heavy-duty trucks or any combination of such training and experience.

(b)            Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:  Maintain order among school children passengers; understand and carry out oral and written instructions and adhere to printed route, stop and time schedules.

Required Qualifications:

(a)            License or Certificate:  Requires possession of:

            1.            Valid Class B-Endorsement PS Commercial California Driver’s License (RSTR: 29)

            2.            Valid California Special Driver Certificate (must have endorsement to drive an 84 passenger school bus)

            3.            Current First Aid card

            4.            DMV Printout (H6)

(b)            Recent TB skin test examination with negative report.
