Job Summary

We are looking for a Custodian to work to clean and maintain the school and grounds. SCHEDULE: M-F 4 p.m. - 7:45 p.m. (10 months, August - June) SALARY: Step A on the Classified Salary Schedule $20.38 Daily cleaning/maintenance of classrooms, school grounds, offices, break-rooms, gardening, minor repairs, and general assistance in maintenance and cleaning of school and district buildings.

Position Title: Custodian/Maintenance Position: Full Time or Part Time

Reports to/Evaluated by: Superintendent/Principal or Assigned Supervisor

Basic Function

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, clean classrooms, offices and other facilities during an assigned shift; perform minor repair and maintenance; assure security of the facility.

Example of Essential Responsibilities and Functions

Clean classrooms, offices and other District/school facilities during an assigned shift; sweep scrub, mop, wax and polish floors and vacuum rugs in carpets in classrooms, offices and other work areas; remove debris, gum, and candy from floors; spot clean and shampoo carpets; dust and polish furniture, light fixtures and woodwork; clean white boards, and empty pencil sharpeners; empty and clean the waste and recyclable item receptacles; refill dispensers; adjust and arrange furniture and equipment; set up facilities for special events and meetings; check and inspect work to assure timely and efficient completion of assignments and compliance with safe work practices;

Clean, scrub and disinfect student and staff restrooms; unclog sinks and toilets, wash windows and walls; clean sinks, mirrors and other bathroom fixtures; restock paper supplies and soap; clean drinking fountains;

Assure security of the assigned facility during assigned hours and upon leaving; lock gates, doors and windows; turn off lights when room is not in use; monitor facilities for fire and other hazards and report to appropriate personnel;

Perform minor maintenance and non-technical repairs on furniture, buildings and grounds including replacing light bulbs; assist others in making repairs as required; report other maintenance and repair needs in a timely manner, as appropriate to assigned supervisor;

Operate and maintain a variety of custodial equipment including power washer, floor stripper, buffer, carpet shampooer, vacuum cleaner, and small power tools and hand tools;

Sweep, pick up paper and other debris from grounds and buildings; raise or lower flags; check doors, windows and assigned area for vandalism; immediately report safety, sanitary fire hazards and other issues to supervisor or administrator;

Turn lights on and off; unlock and lock doors and gates; patrol grounds checking doors, lights and gates, report safety, sanitary and fire hazards as appropriate to supervisor or administration.

Maintain equipment and supplies in appropriate condition; requisition custodial supplies as necessary per established purchasing process. Keep accurate inventory of supplies and equipment;

Answer two-way radio in a timely and polite manner. Maintain custodial closets in an organized and orderly manner. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

English Language

Proper methods, materials, tools and equipment used in custodial work.

Modern cleaning methods including basic methods of cleaning and preserving floors, white boards, carpets, furniture, walls and fixtures.

Requirements of maintaining school building in a safe, clean and orderly condition. Appropriate safety practices and procedures.

Principles and practices of training and providing work direction.

Ability to:

Prioritize job duties, urgent, safety related, teacher needs, and routine maintenance needs. Communicate in English, effectively with others in a positive and polite manner.

Exercise initiative, demonstrate attention to detain and complete assignments. Understand, accept and follow oral and written directions.

Follow established District processes, policies and guidelines.

Use cleaning materials, equipment and methods according to established procedures. Maintain tools and equipment assigned in appropriate condition.

Perform minor non-technical repairs.

Observe and report need for maintenance and repairs. Lift heavy objects- over 50 lbs.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Demonstrate courtesy and respect to others.

Meet schedules and time lines.

Observe legal and defensive driving practices.

Incumbents may be assigned to work other than the regular workweek hours and/or a five consecutive day workweek, to include evenings and/or Saturday and Sunday, depending on District’s needs.

Environment: Work is performed in inside and outside settings.

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an inside and outside environment at a quick pace, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction.

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

It is a temporary position, M-F 4 p.m. - 7:45 p.m. The individual selected for the pre-employment process includes live scan (fingerprints) clearance and TB test clearance, prior to employment (more information will be provided after the interview and once the individual is selected.)
