SAN GABRIEL UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT TITLE: Substitute Custodian QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Graduation from high school or equivalent. 2. Knowledge of methods of cleaning materials, equipment and supplies used in custodial and cleaning work. 3. Knowledge of school buildings and equipment maintenance. 4. Knowledge of routine hand and power tools. 5. Ability to follow assigned schedules. 6. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written records. 7. Ability to lift up to 58 pounds. 8. Ability to bend, stoop and to reach. 9. Ability to maintain cooperative relations with those contacted in the course of work. 10. Ability to perform work in a safe manner. 11. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable. REPORTS TO: Principal JOB GOAL: Under general supervision, be responsible for the custodial functions at an elementary school, middle school, high school or district office; to participate in keeping the assigned areas and facilities clean, orderly and safe; and to do other related work as may be required. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Participate fully in the performing of custodial work such as the general cleaning of classrooms, offices, restrooms, cafetorium, walkways and grounds. 2. Perform custodial and general non-technical maintenance work such as sweeping, scrubbing, mopping, striping, sealing and waxing floors; vacuum and shampoo rugs and carpets; dust and polish furniture and woodwork; clean chalkboards, desks, chairs and easels, chalk trays, and other classroom instructional equipment; wash windows, walls, tables, benches and other woodwork; clean restrooms including doors, mirrors, sinks, walls, floors, toilets and hardware; fill dispensers and receptacles as needed; arrange, set-up, and remove furniture and equipment for preparing classrooms, auditoriums or other activity areas for special events, activities or meetings. 3. Insure that the needs of the faculty, public and others are met to prevent interruptions of normal school activities. 4. Open or close school facilities each day, including raising or lowering the flag; inspect buildings and grounds for health and safety hazards or vandalism and assure that affected areas are secured until repairs can be made. 5. Make minor non-technical maintenance repairs. 6. Contact maintenance to report needed repairs; submit work order requests. 7. Participate in preparation for special activities and events held at the school. 8. During summer or recess periods, perform heavy cleaning work, such as washing walls, windows and woodwork, clean and sanitize furniture, strip and refinish floors, replace floor and ceiling tiles, and similar maintenance and repair work. 9. On call status to secure broken windows and other vandalized facilities when called by police. 10. Check and report unsafe conditions of playground equipment and grounds. 11. Provide incidental security of school facilities during work hours such as notifying police of unauthorized persons loitering on grounds, misuse of grounds and facilities, and securing gates, doors, and windows at end of each shift.
