ABOUT THE JOB: Under general supervision, performs skilled work in preparation of surfaces and application of paints and some other finishes; performs related work as required.

JOB DUTIES: Uses and maintains electric, gas or hand equipment, including brush, roller, or spray guns in applying paint, varnish, shellac, enamel, lacquer, or other protective or decorative finishes to interior and exterior surfaces such as wood, metal, glass, plaster, stucco, wallboard, brick, and cement; scrapes, sands, waterblasts, tapes, patches, plasters, fills, and in other ways prepares or repairs surfaces for painting or repainting; applies primer and finish coats; applies line stripes to parking lots and athletic courts; lays out stencils and paints logos and symbols on concrete and asphalt surfaces; moves furniture and equipment to complete painting jobs; erects, rigs, dismantles and/or moves ladders, scaffolding and platforms; mixes paints to meet color needs; disposes of used rags, solid waste from thinner, and empty containers in accordance with current government guidelines and district policies; keeps records of time and materials; estimates labor and materials needed; refinishes furniture and equipment; operates boom lifts and scissor lifts; drives to various district sites; and may lead the work of others.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education and Experience:  High school graduation or equivalent and any combination equivalent to one year of experience (equivalent to full-time work) as a journey-level painter. (Journey-level is typically acquired through a formal apprentice program or through four years of experience under a journey-level tradesperson whom provided training equivalent to that given in an apprentice program.) Part-time experience will be considered and adjusted appropriately. Any other combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.

LICENSE: Must possess and maintain a valid Class C California Driver License and remain insurable at the standard insurance market rate.  Candidates must submit a recent (within the last 30 days) original DMV driving record by the oral rating exam.

A SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE REQUIRES THE FOLLOWING….

Knowledge of:  Methods, materials, and equipment used in the painting trade; proper techniques for preparing and painting a variety of surfaces; and current related government guidelines, district policies, and safety practices.

Ability to:  Apply paints and prepare surfaces by hand or power tools; mix paints and match colors; erect and work from high riggings and scaffolding; climb and work standing, using arms and hands, for entire shift; follow written and oral instructions; read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; work cooperatively with others; lead the work of others; operate a boom lift and scissor lift; keep accurate work records; and estimate labor and materials needed.
