Position Definition:

 

To perform work involving the maintenance, installation and repair of assigned vocational department equipment and/or facilities; to serve as a technical assistant to students and faculty; and to maintain inventory and coordinate laboratory operation.

Examples of Duties/Essential Functions:

 

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Collaborates with faculty to arrange and assist with laboratory assignments/teaching aids, exercises and exams.

Provides technical support when needed to students and faculty.

Coordinates, maintains, inspects, tests, and repairs laboratory equipment for assigned department(s).

Designs and maintains inventory control systems and orders tools and supplies; maintains records of supplies used.

Ensures safety and maintains general cleanliness in assigned areas including signage and assisting maintenance personnel.

Implements and maintains departmental health and safety policies and procedures to comply with District, federal, state and local health and safety and hazardous waste regulations.

Monitors and controls expenditures through the District’s online system to ensure compliance within established budget.

Collaborates with faculty to submit purchase orders, complete budget transfers and journal entries, prepare cost estimates for budget recommendation, and submit justifications for budget items.

Recruits, trains, supervises and evaluates student assistants.

Safely operates laboratory equipment.

Performs related duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

Education/Experience:

 

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Three (3) years of experience performing equipment operation, repair and maintenance in areas relevant to assigned department.

EDUCATION/LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE

Possession of a high school diploma/GED or the equivalent, supplemented by college level coursework in relevant equipment technology program.

Possession of, or ability to acquire, a Class B driver’s license with airbrake endorsements.

 

Knowledge Of:

 

Theory and techniques of operation and maintenance of department equipment and tools.

Equipment, materials and supplies used in assigned department.

Vendors and suppliers of equipment for assigned department.

Safe work practices, safe operation of equipment and safety precautions for the maintenance of equipment.

Methods and procedures of inventory control to order and stock parts.

Basic record-keeping and purchasing principles.

Basic mathematical principles.

Modern software applications (Microsoft Office Suite, etc.).

Principles and practices of supervision and training.

Policies and procedures regarding laboratory and related facilities and systems.

Desirable Experience:

Experience in diagnostics and repairing of motors. Software experience and programing with AutoCAD, Excel, Fusion 360, and SolidWorks. Manual and CNC machining experience on lathes and mills. Some mechanical hydraulic, and pneumatic actuator knowledge as it applies to robotics and mechatronics.Desirable License or Certificate:Possession of any certification within the manufacturing fields such as, but not limited to:National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS)Manual Machining CertificateHaas Certified Operator

 

Special Instructions:

 

The Engineering Technology & Industrial Design Instructional Lab Technician performs technical work in the maintenance, repair, calibration, and installation of various machine shop equipment; distributes and maintains tooling for students; and arranges for repair and calibration of major equipment. Prepares and assembles materials and equipment used in machining and prototyping; assists students and faculty with instructional activities; and orders, issues, receives, and stores materials and supplies.

 

Key Responsibilities:1. Oversee the operation and maintenance of an instructional environment in the subject of machining, prototyping, and manufacturing; train and provide work direction to Instructional Assistants and student assistants.

2. Trains and guides students to ensure proper operation and maintenance of shop equipment; distributes parts to students for use in laboratory exercises.3. Assist instructors, staff, and students in the operation of equipment and instrumentation common to the machining, prototyping, and manufacturing field. Assist students as directed in the completion of required assignments.4. Prepare and issue materials and equipment for student use; maintain records of materials and equipment loaned out to students.5. Order, receive, catalog, and store supplies, materials, and equipment; maintain inventories, ensuring that adequate quantities are available for timely instructional use; mark equipment with approved identification.6. Prepare instructional materials and equipment for instructor demonstration and student laboratories as requested according to approved procedures; update the job sheets used on the labs.7. Operates, maintains, and makes adjustments on machine shop equipment that include automated saws, drill presses, manual mills, manual lathes, CNC machines, laser cutters, 3D printers, and hand tools.8. Test, adjust, and maintain equipment; make visual and operational checks of equipment to ensure it is functioning properly; assure proper storage and handling of equipment; trouble-shoot faulty operation of equipment; assist students in the proper operation of equipment; check equipment for broken or loose parts and bad electrical connections.9. Make minor repairs on equipment; repair and replace broken or damaged parts and electrical connections and power cords.10. Maintain machine shop and be responsible for hazardous waste collection/disposal.11. Be the main contact between IT and for the Engineering Technology and Industrial Design computers.12. Provide technical assistance in the preparation of specifications for equipment and material purchases; recommend selection of equipment as requested; may interview vendors to assess new equipment and supplies.13. Assist in the preparation of the machine shop budget; monitor budget expenditures.14. Maintains inventory records of supplies, materials, and equipment, and prepares periodic inventory reports and requisitions as needed.15. Maintains a file of vendors’ catalogs and equipment manuals.

 

Note: New employees will be placed at the first step which is $31,134 per year, second step $32,712 per year or third step at $34,362 per year (depending upon experience). Based on current salary placement guidelines, all step increases for which an employee becomes eligible shall take place on July 1st of each fiscal year. These increases will occur, on annual basis, until the maximum step of $37,932 per year is reached on the salary schedule.
