CUSTODIAL AND GROUNDS WORKER

BASIC FUNCTION:
Under supervision of Custodial and Grounds Supervisor, plan and perform cleaning tasks in an assigned area, school plant, or installation; perform a variety of semi-skilled construction and maintenance repair on buildings and grounds; perform general and varied grounds work and manual labor as directed; and perform related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Sweep, mop, scrub, strip, wax and polish linoleum, tile, and other wood floors; clean concrete;
2. Vacuum and shampoo appropriate floor coverings;
3. Clean and dust walls, woodwork, blackboards, furniture, lockers and other equipment;
4. Wash, scrub, and disinfect restrooms and shower rooms;
5. Clean windows, door glass, and drinking fountains;
6. Clear minor problems in water and sewer systems;
7. Empty and clean waste containers;
8. Replace light bulbs;
9. Raise and lower flags;
10. Open and close classrooms and other school facilities for various school functions and services;
11. Move and rearrange chairs, tables, desks and other equipment;
12. Assist in minor repairs and/or replacement to heating, air conditioning, plumbing and electrical systems, such as circuit breakers, electrical wall plates, and other minor corrections;
13. Repair and maintain school facilities involving minor carpentry work;
14. Paint over graffiti;
15. Maintain athletic fields; set up equipment needed for athletic events;
16. Issue, receive, store and account for athletic equipment and uniforms; inspect clothing and equipment for needed repairs; install and repair athletic equipment;
17. Set up equipment for games and/or gym classes; set up and maintain home game communication systems;
18. Maintain pool cleanliness and proper chemical balances as requested;
19. Operate small power and hand tools and small power equipment, such as lawn mowers, small tractors, vacuum cleaners, and other vehicles as required;
20. Assist in repair and/or replacement of sprinkling systems and fixtures, such as sprinkler heads, risers, and minor leaks or breaks in sprinkler lines;
21. Plant and transplant flowers and shrubs;
22. Reseed and fertilize lawns;
23. Weed and rake grounds; trim bushes and tress; dig small ditches; and
24. Perform other manual labor as required.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
1. Modern cleaning methods, including use and care of cleaning equipment;
2. Requirements for maintaining school facilities and grounds in a safe, clean and orderly condition;
3. Methods, supplies, and tools used in cultivating and caring for lawns, shrubs, trees and plants; and
4. Methods and practices followed in the maintenance of tools, machinery, and equipment;

ABILITY TO:
1. Perform a wide variety of minor maintenance repair activities;
2. Operate light hand power equipment;
3. Use cleaning materials and equipment with skill and efficiency;
4. Use tools and equipment in groundskeeping work;
5. Learn scheduling procedures;
6. Follow verbal and written instructions;
7. Lift; and
8. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

EXPERIENCE/TRAINING/EDUCATION:
Any combination equivalent to:
1. High School Diploma/equivalent or higher;
2. Two years of experience in custodial, grounds, and minor maintenance work.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE REQUIRED:
1. Possession of a valid State of California Class C Driver’s License.

 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Environment:

Indoor and outdoor environment; regular exposure to fumes, dust, and odors; subject to driving a vehicle to conduct work.


PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

Walking and standing for extended periods of time; bending at the waist; pushing and pulling cleaning equipment; lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling and moving furniture and objects weighing up to 75 pounds; climbing ladders; and reaching overhead and horizontally to replace light bulbs.


HAZARDS:

Exposure to dust and cleaning chemicals.
