CHARTER OAK UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT INTERMEDIATE OR HIGH SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF POSITION: As a part of an intermediate or high school teaching assignment, teach one or more classes of physical education to students in grades 7-12, and assist in other school programs as assigned. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Teach knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, rhythms and dance, and individual, dual, or team sports to secondary students, utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities. E Instruct students in citizenship, basic communication skills, and other general elements of the course of study common to all teachers, as specified in state law, administrative regulations and procedures of the school district. E Work cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning a balanced physical education program, adapting daily schedules to accommodate weather conditions and provide time for changing clothes, showers, instruction, exercise, and sports activities. E Analyze, demonstrate and explain basic skills, knowledge and strategies of formal sports, games, rhythms, and fundamentals of bodily movement. E Provide individual or small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student, to the extent possible. E May teach one or more classes of adapted physical education for students with orthopedic and/or medical problems. E Provide appropriate safety instruction and make safety checks on equipment and field areas to insure the overall safety of students. E Establish and maintain, with the cooperation of the school administration, standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment in the physical education areas. E Evaluate each student’s growth in physical fitness and in physical skills and knowledge. Assess each individual’s contribution to the performance of the group in team sports. Prepare progress reports. E Maintain surveillance over storage and use of such items as school-owned uniforms, towels, lockers, equipment and supplies to prevent loss and abuse, working through student monitors or locker room attendants where appropriate. E Maintain professional competence through participation in in-service education activities provided by the district, and/or in self-selected professional growth activities. E OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Select and requisition equipment, instructional aids, and instructional supplies, and maintain required inventory records. E Identify student needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems. E Cooperate with school administration in providing specialty performing groups for Open House, PTA meetings, rallies and assemblies. E Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day. E Perform basic attendance accounting and business services as required. E Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs within the school of assignment and/or on a district level. E Share in the sponsorship of student activities and participate in faculty committees. May plan and coordinate the work of teacher aides or student teachers. Perform other concomitant duties as may be reasonably assigned. SUPERVISION EXERCISED OR RECEIVED: Under the immediate direction of the school principal. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Credential: General Elementary, General Junior High, General Secondary, Special Secondary-Physical Education, Standard Secondary (issued on a partial fulfillment basis. Education: Bachelor’s degree with physical education major, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements. Experience: Practice teaching (6 semester hours or 120 clock hours) or two years of full-time teaching experience, at least half in physical education. Senior high teachers assigned to interscholastic or other special activities shall have had demonstrated teaching experience and/or competence in the activity in which assigned. Personal Qualities: Appearance, grooming, and personality which establish a desirable example for pupils. Ability to meet district standards for physical and mental health. Better than average recommendations from student teaching supervisors or other professionals who have observed the personal characteristics, scholastic attainment, and classroom performance of the teacher. Physical stamina and skill in sports and other physical activities. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Intermediate or high school indoor and outdoor environment. PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Hearing and speaking to exchange information and provide instruction. Standing for extended periods of time. Kneeling and crouching to assist students during physical education activities. Seeing to monitor student behavior during physical education activities. Bending at the waist. Walking over rough or uneven surfaces. Dexterity of hands and fingers to set up athletic equipment. Running, jumping, reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally, and physical agility and stamina to demonstrate activities.
