Curriculum Specialist

A curriculum specialist serves as a teacher specialist who coordinates the distribution, administration and collection of State and District assessments, assists teachers in implementing standards-based curriculum, provides instruction to small groups of students, provides professional development focusing on student achievement, serves as site GATE and ELD coordinator, and performs other duties as assigned. 

Assessments:

Attend monthly Site Test Coordinators’ meeting in order to assist teachers in the implementation of State-Mandated tests including:  

STAR-CST Science and norm-referenced

Smarter Balanced Assessments

CAPA

CELDT (and any successor test)

     Furnish teachers with support and assistance in regards to District and site assessments which include:

Arranging modifications and accommodations

Initial Assessments

Interim Assessments

New student assessments (as needed)

End-of-Year District Multiple Measures

District Writing Prompts

GATE Testing

Math Field Day

  • Collect, organize and provide teachers opportunities to reflect on assessment data.

Duties include:

Receiving and processing data

Maintaining records

Analyzing, evaluating, and reporting data results to District, principals, teachers,

and parents

Organizing grade level meetings for assessment analysis

Provide student lists for differentiated instruction 

Curriculum and Instruction:

In order to meet the needs of all students and to assist teachers in curriculum, planning and implementation of instructional materials, curriculum specialists will:

  • Establish, manage, and maintain the Curriculum Lab
  • Organize and implement State frameworks/standards and District curriculum guides
  • Participate in District wide curriculum development and textbook adoption committee
  • Preview and order instructional materials
  • Assist teachers in appropriate selection of materials based on students’ needs

Intervention:

  • Identify students in need of intervention services
  • Maintain records of participation or non-attendance
  • Identify and inform Summer School participants
  • Maintain Individual Learning Plans
  • Provide instruction in intervention programs
  • Collect and organize student data for data chats 

GATE:

  • Provide testing and maintain records district
  • Engage in parent communication
  • Support GATE teachers in strategies for differentiated instruction Liaison between District and Site GATE programs

ELD:

  • Organize testing programs
  • Work with the ELD Office Specialist to maintain records
  • Identify English Learners (using the CELDT and any successor test) and students who are ready to be Reclassified Fluent-English-Proficient
  • Engage in parent communication regarding academic progress and reclassification
  • Support teachers in strategies for differentiated instruction
  • Provide additional instruction in the ELD program

 Professional Development: (as required by NCLB Mandates)

Curriculum specialists provide professional development that improves student achievement and child development through:

  • In-services on curriculum adoptions and mandates
  • Demonstration lessons focused on effective instructional techniques and strategies
  • Staff meetings
  • Site professional development days, including release days
  • Conference attendance to provide current instructional practices to teachers and administrators
  • Support New Teachers 

Ability to 

  • Communicate with staff, students, parents, community members, and administrators
  • Manage and organize programs
  • Provide professional development workshops and demonstration lessons
  • Select and order materials relevant to the needs of students
  • Facilitate the change process and incorporate new teaching strategies and techniques
  • Assign and monitor the duties of instructional assistants as needed
  • Assist teachers in meeting individual and group needs of students

Knowledge of:

  • The California Standards for the Teaching Profession
  • The K-5 Common Core Content Standards in English/Language Arts, ELD, Mathematics, History/Social Science, and Science
  • The identification, placement, and instructional needs of special needs students (GATE, ELL, at-risk, special education)
  • Assessment and evaluation of student progress/learning and the planning of instruction based on analysis of assessment data
  • The provisions of the B.U.S.D. LEA plan for NCLB

Qualifications:

  • Possession of a valid California credential – Multiple Subject and CLAD or

SB1969/395 certification

  • Upper division or graduate work in academic areas for curricular and instructional practices
  • Teaching experience at a variety of elementary grade levels
  • Knowledge of and experience working with English learners and special needs programs and students
