Job Summary

The School Counselor will join a team of educators focused on the intellectual, physical and emotional wellness of students. JTD is committed to a child-centered, empathetic, strengths-based approach in which students develop healthy and caring relationships and a positive attitude toward learning. The School Counselor provides support and interventions to students, and consults with teachers, families, and administrators to help children with social, emotional and mental health issues. The counselor works with the other members of the Student Success Team (SST) to provide leadership in program development for social and emotional learning, the Growth Ed program, and in enhancing student life by fostering a culture of belonging.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

Collaborate with teachers and administrators to implement social and emotional learning

curriculum and frameworks

 

Develop and teach Growth Education curriculum and instruction with a team of educators

 

Assess and identify students in need of social/emotional support in consultation with teachers

and administration

 

Conduct classroom observations of referred students

 

Provide direct social/emotional support to identified students as well as groups of students

 

Facilitate communication between families, allied professionals, and the school to effectively

support students’ social/emotional well-being

 

Recommend, in close partnership with the SST, further interventions or outside services,

including but not limited to neuropsychological evaluations, psychotherapy, or social skills groups

 

Partner with the SST to support students, evaluating and translating psycho-educational testing,

when appropriate

 

Document and manage information (social/emotional, testing, medications) in a central location

 

Attend grade level and faculty meetings as well as appropriate parent meetings

 

Perform crisis intervention as needed

 

Facilitates understanding in the schools adult community of social and emotional development

by conducting in-service training and workshops, classes, and groups

 

Participates in and enhances school community by establishing a campus presence and

promoting activities that improve the quality of student life and health

 

Offer guidance to the administrative team to address concerns related to a student’s social,

emotional, and behavioral well-being

 

Work with students

 

Lead one-on-one, small group or whole group sessions for students on topics such as peer

relationships, coping and soothing strategies, effective social and problem-solving skills, and

conflict resolution, to name a few

 

Observe students in the classroom and develop behavioral plans in partnership with teachers,

division directors, and other members of the student support teams

 

Commit significant time to building relationships with students when there is not a crisis, both in

the classroom as well as in less-structured environments such as recess and lunchtime

 

Help students develop their understanding of ‘self’ as it relates to ‘others’

 

Advise student clubs or offer small-group meetings, as requested

 

Work with colleagues

 

Meet regularly and work collaboratively with Academic Leadership Team and Success Team on

issues related to the mental health of the community

 

Work with classroom teachers to develop students’ social skills and peer relationships; develop

and support behavioral plans for individual students

 

Work collaboratively with the Success Team to develop and lead professional workshops for

faculty and staff on relevant topics and best practices in the field

 

Work with families

 

Design parent education workshops in consultation with the SST

 

Consult with families and provide referrals, when needed, to outside mental health servicesParticipate in meetings with families and caregivers

 

Partner with families to develop and implement behavior plans and offer support and resources

as needed

 

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE and QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Masters Degree in School Counseling, Psychology or Social Work with a Clinical License in

Psychology/MFT or Social Work

 

Demonstrated knowledge of psychological theory and practices and the ability to apply

knowledge to the needs and requirements of an independent K-6 school; previous experience in

school setting strongly preferred

 

Ability to communicate confidential and sensitive information to parents, students, faculty, and

administration

 

Ability to interpret and analyze neuropsychological reports and make professionally sound

recommendations for interventions or outside services

 

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing

 

Ability to work independently and as part of a team

 

Remain current on relevant laws and professional practices as they pertain to elementary school

aged children and mental health services in independent schools

 

Excellent organizational, human relations and communication skills

 

In partnership with the administration and Student Services team, support the continuing

education of The John Thomas Dye parents (i.e., participate in parent coffees, offer

recommendations of appropriate books or articles, etc.)
