DEFINITION: 

Under the direction of the Carpenter-Roofing-Locksmith Supervisor performs skilled carpentry work in the maintenance and construction of buildings and equipment; and performs related duties as assigned.

May exercise technical guidance over less experienced personnel.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: (Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential functions shown below (E).  This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge, or abilities associated with this classification but is intended to accurately reflect the principle job elements.)

 

Works from plans, oral instructions, sketches, and blueprints.  May prepare rough sketches. (E) 

Repairs, remodels and installs doors, windows, floors, ramps, steps, counters, partition walls, bookcases, cabinets, shelving, roof overhangs, fascias, drywall, insulation and siding on structures. (E)

Hang doors, repair door jams, installs and adjusts door closures.  Installs all hardware on doors including panic hardware. (E). 

Repairs and/or replaces all types of flooring materials. (E)

Repair and mainteaning all types of celings such as drywall, acoustical tiles, suspended T-bar, etc. (E)

Build, repair, and maintain all types of wooden and plastic laminate tables, benches, cabinetry and furniture. (E)

Repairs and replaces dry-rotted areas on structures including roofing, siding and flooring. (E)

May assist in setting forms and pouring concrete. (E)

Remove, install and maintain accessories such as chalkboards, markerboards, tackboards, projections screens, maps, etc. (E)

Install, repair and maintain all types of wall finishes such as drywall, fiberglas reinforced panel (FRP), tackable wall surfaces (Domtar), etc. (E)

Ability to make repairs on curtain hardware. (E)

Remodels offices and classrooms. (E)

Maintains tools in proper working condition. (E)

Ability to set up scaffolding, use ladders and extension ladders, operate man lifts, boom trucks and fork lifts. (E)

Operates hand and power machinery such as saws, shapers, sanders, drill presses, joiners, routers and lathes. (E)

Maintains inventory of stock. Orders materials as necessary. (E)

Keeps records and assist with reports as required. (E)

May be required to respond to emergency calls.

Maintains regular and prompt attendance in the work place. (E)

Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Methods, tools, equipment, and materials used in carpentry.
  • Techniques used in maintaining a variety of building components including framing, walls, doors, windows, floors, counters, cabinets and roofs.
  • Qualities of various woods and related materials and their adaptability and uses in specific situations.
  • Oral and written communication skills.

ABILITY TO:

  • Perform journey-level carpentry work.
  • Operate a variety of carpentry tools including saws, planers, shapers, joiners, and lathes.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and diagrams.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Physical capability sufficient to perform job tasks.
  • Develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Carry out oral and written directions; write and speak at a level sufficient to fulfill the duties to be performed for the position described.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  

Any combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to completion of one year of responsible journeyman level carpentry experience.

License or Certificate

Possession of a valid California driver's license is required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

ENVIRONMENT:

Indoor and outdoor work environment.

Regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors.

As required must wear protective devices such as earplugs, dust mask, coveralls, gloves, safety boots and safety glasses.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Employee in this position must have/be able to:

  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of trade tools.
  • Walk and/or stand for extended periods of time.
  • See with/without assistive devices sufficient to perform assigned duties.
  • Lift and/or carry up to 40 lbs for distances up to 100 ft. or upstairs
  • Occasionally lift and/or carry up to 94 lbs for distances up to 100 ft. or upstairs.
  • Push/pull up to 90 lbs. for short distances.
  • Sufficient body movement and balance to bend at the waist, kneel, crawl, crouch and stoop.
  • Reach overhead, above and below the shoulders and horizontally.
  • Climb ladders and working from heights.
  • See, hear and speak with/without assistive devices sufficient to communicate effectively with others.

HAZARDS:

Exposure to cleaning agents and chemicals

Use of power hand tools.

Exposure to sawdust.
