CLASS TITLE: SCHOOL NURSE
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Director of Special Education, provide various health care programs and services for the District in support of student health and wellness including screening, treatment, health education, record-keeping and referral functions; serve as a technical resource to students, parents and staff concerning health services, issues, problems and related information.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
The classification specification does not describe all duties performed by all incumbents within the class. This summary provides examples of typical tasks performed in this classification.
· Provide various health care programs and services for the District in support of student health and wellness including screening, treatment, record-keeping and referral functions; monitor and assure students receive adequate medical services to maintain optimal health; assist in assuring related activities comply with established laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures. E
· Serve as a technical resource to students, parents and staff concerning health services, issues, problems and related information; respond to inquiries and provide detailed and technical information concerning health screenings, treatment, issues and related laws, rules, programs, services and regulations; provide health education services and presentations to students and staff. E
· Assist students and their families with resolving health issues; refer students and parents to appropriate community resources for recommended health services; follow up with parents regarding health care referrals, immunizations and medications; notify parents concerning physical defects and potential health problems of students. E
· Screen and evaluate medical conditions of students; examine students and identify illnesses, injuries and medical emergencies; provide treatment and administer first aid and emergency medical care as necessary; coordinate response to emergency situations. E
· Maintain caseload of students and coordinate communications and information to meet the health needs of students and families; visit schools to provide health services, observe activities, monitor progress, provide technical support and assure health needs are being met. E
· Establish and maintain cumulative health records and files for individual students; review records to assure immunization data and student health information is current; update and assure accuracy of information related to students, screenings and health issues. E
· Conduct physical examinations and screenings to assess students' physical condition and health in areas such as weight, height, hearing, vision, scoliosis, lice and others; monitor vital signs; administer routine physicals; notify appropriate personnel of health conditions and related concerns as appropriate. E
· Visit school sites to assist health personnel with immunization programs and activities as needed; collaborate with other staff and administrators in recommending students for placement in special education classes as directed. E
· Communicate with students, college personnel and various outside agencies to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns. E
· Operate standard office equipment including a computer and assigned software; drive a vehicle to conduct work; utilize a variety of medical instruments and equipment; assure cleanliness and sanitary conditions of medical instruments, equipment and assigned area. E
· Monitor and maintain adequate inventory levels of medical supplies; order, receive and assure proper storage of supplies. E
· Perform related duties as assigned.

Any combination equivalent to: bachelor’s degree in nursing or closely related field and one year nursing experience in a clinic, hospital or doctor’s office.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid School Nurse Services Credential.
Valid Public Health Nurse License or Registered Nurse License.
Valid California driver’s license.
