The Student Health Services Department of the Long Beach Community College District is seeking qualified individuals for current opportunities as a Mental Health Clinician. This position is part-time, but there are additional opportunities available for limited term, full-time positions as well. The incumbent will provide professional mental health care to students in accordance with District laws, regulations and protocols, will also document student information, treatment plans and maintain confidential records. Incumbents must have experience working with school systems or other agencies providing direct behavioral and/or mental health services. Additionally, the qualified candidate will have obtained a Masters in Social Work, Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy, or a PhD in Psychology from an accredited university. Candidates must hold a current, valid California State license as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Marriage and Family Mental Therapist, or Licensed Psychologist.

 

A successful candidate will also be fluent in a second language as designated by the District to meet department needs; This position requires the ability to speak, read, and write in Spanish. Please note, these part-time positions are categorically grant funded through September 2027, continued employment in these positions are contingent on continued funding.

This position will be funded through the CASA Grant. The Community Advancing Student Achievement (CASA) Program will expand the scale of services designed to address the critical basic need insecurity faced by many of LBCC's Hispanic and low-income students and the barriers it poses to their academic, professional, and personal success. The CASA Program will provide low-income Hispanic participants with direct aid, service referrals, and critical job placements to address their housing and food insecurities. To ensure long-term success for participants, CASA will connect them with integral support that include mental health, career, completion, and transfer services. Additionally, the Program will create an inclusive, compassionate, and welcoming environment for participants by providing several ways for faculty, staff, and administrators to participate in professional development that will foster approaches to services that are trauma-informed, culturally-responsive, and asset-based.

 

Through the creation of network of support that addresses students' basic needs and connects them with key academic, social, and professional services, the CASA Program will achieve the following long-term goals: 1) Increase LBCC's capacity to address the basic needs and mental health of Latinx and low-income students so that they are able to achieve their educational goals; 2) Create a continuum of care that supports Latinx and low-income students experiencing basic need insecurity so that they feel valued throughout the process of completing their educational goals; 3) Ensure Latinx and low-income students are prepared to transfer to a 4-year university; and 4) Provide short- and long-term career supports that ensure Latinx and low-income students have stable income and are prepared for the workplace.

Duties

 

GENERAL PURPOSE

 

Under direction, provides mental health services to District students; identifies and treats mental health disorders in individual and group psychotherapy sessions. Provides consultation and referrals for students as appropriate; ensures compliance with state laws and regulations, District policies and mental health program protocols; and performs related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

 

Mental Health Clinicians are responsible for providing mental health services to District students. Incumbents are responsible for overseeing the functions of the District's mental health services as a mental health educator and advocate for students, staff and the campus community.

Incumbents make independent mental assessments, diagnoses and evaluations, and provide crisis intervention to students in accordance with state and District laws, regulations and protocols. Duties and responsibilities are carried out with considerable independence within the framework of established policies, procedures and guidelines.

 

Qualifications

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS POSITION:

 

Education, Training and Experience:

 

A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is a Masters in Social Work, Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy, PhD in Psychology from an accredited university.

 

Experience:

Experience working with school systems or other agencies providing direct behavioral and/or mental health services.

 

Knowledge of:

 

• Evidence-based mental health practice.

• Principles and techniques of evidence-based mental health assessment, risk assessment and interventions.

• Principles and techniques of psychopharmacology.

• College-based mental health services.

• Federal, state and local laws, codes, rules, regulations and court decisions applicable to mental health assessment and treatment.

• Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.Ability to:

• Perform specialized duties related to the mental health care of community college students.

• Assure compliance with established federal, state and District program performance standards and protocols in areas of assigned responsibility.

• Prepare and deliver oral presentations regarding mental health issues.

• Function as a member of a team.

• Provide mental health treatment related information to students.

• Appropriately respond to mental health emergencies, conduct risk assessment and interventions.

• Organize, set priorities and exercise sound independent judgment within areas of assigned responsibility.

• Interpret, apply, explain and reach sound decisions in accordance with District and department policies, procedures and labor contract provisions.

• Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.

• Prepare clear, concise and accurate reports, correspondence and other written materials.

• Operate a computer using word processing and other business software and other standard office equipment.

• Organize and maintain specialized files.

• Maintain confidentiality of District files and records.

• Exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive, complex and confidential issues and patient situations.

• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other District management, staff, faculty, administrators, students, community mental health care providers and others encountered in the course of work.

• Speak, read, and write in a second language as designated by the District.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:

 

Current, valid California State license as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Marriage and Family Mental Therapist, or Licensed Psychologist.

 

A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District's vehicle insurance policy.

Fluency in a second language as designated by the District to meet department needs. This position requires the ability to speak, read, and write in Spanish.

 

Meeting the minimum requirements of the position does not guarantee advancement in the selection process. Candidate qualifications will be assessed to determine those who meet and exceed requirements, and are deemed most competitive amongst the applicant pool to proceed.
