JOB DESCRIPTION: COACH
DEFINITION
Under direction, to assist in the planning, development, and implemen¬tation of the policies, regulations, guidelines, and procedures pertaining to a sports program. Head Varsity Coach is charged with administering all of the essential functions and related items in connection with the sport, including establishing the type of program, developing continuity and providing a philosophy for all levels of the sport. All other coaches in the sport are considered to be assistants, even though the titles may not be exactly that.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This position requires professional expertise in sport activities commonly associated with public schools. Directly related teaching and instruction experience is required to perform demonstration teaching and athletic skill development. The coach meets frequently with school administrators, other staff and parents to communicate information, data, and alternative problem solutions.
This a non-sedentary position classification that performs light to medium work that involves walking, running and standing for extended periods. This position requires accurate perception of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, handling and working with educational sport learning aids, materials and objects, and providing oral information and direction.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
•Plans, organizes, coordinates, and provides participation in the school site sports program.
•Plans, organizes, and coordinates sports activities and training workouts, and instructs individuals concerning specific physical performance activities and procedures.
•Observes sport participants during practice and workout sessions to detect and correct errors in activity procedures and methods.
•Instructs, explains and enforces health and safety rules and regulations.
•Develops and implements physical conditioning programs that allow athletes to achieve maximum performance.
•Reviews, audits and monitors sport activity related injuries.
• Assists in the selection of sport activity uniforms and related sport apparatus and equipment.
•Assesses the athletic team skills and abilities and the opponents’ capabilities to determine game strategies.
•Assists the A.D. in coordination of travel and equipment transporting to games and activities.
•Confers with, counsels, and advises A. D. concern¬ing sports programs and activities.
•Coordinates opponent scouting activities.
•Makes recommendations to revise, update, and incorporate creative and innova¬tive trends into the District sports programs.
•Responsible for the supervision of athletes during all activities including travel time.
•Assists A.D. in scheduling all contests for all levels of the sport; and in arranging for transportation when needed.
•Distributes a written set of team rules prior to the beginning of season to athletes and parents.

•Assists the Athletic Director in directing the maintenance and preparation for games and facilities.
•All assistant coaches will be required to perform any of these duties as directed by the head coach.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Methods, techniques, procedures, and strategies concerning the development and maintenance of an effective sports program;
Policies, regulations, and procedures pertaining to sport performances;
Groups and organizations within the local community program;
Modern trends pertaining to sports programs and activities.
Ability to:
Provide specialized resource support and coordination of a creative and innovative sports program;
Analyze and assess sports program needs, and offer recommenda¬tions per¬taining to program activity revisions, additions, or deletions;
Participate in the evaluation of the District sports programs and activities;
Understand and carry out oral and written directions with minimal direction;
Communicate effectively in oral and written form;
Establish and maintain effective organization, community, and public relation¬ships.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Any combination of experience and training that will provide the required knowledge and skill. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skill would be:
Experience:
Prior experience as a coach.
Education:
Possession of an earned baccalaureate or higher degree from an accredited college or university and possession of a valid California Teaching Credential.
Certification Requirement
Possession of a valid CPR and First Aid Card.
Completion of approved coaching program such as provided in the ASEP Coaching Certification.
