APPLE VALLEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
CLASS TITLE: SCHOOL POLICE DISPATCHER
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of Chief of Police, provide dispatch functions and communicate with and monitor various law enforcement activities for Police & Security Services. Provide varied and responsible clerical support services; organize office activities and coordinate flow of communications for the department; assure smooth and efficient office operations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: Incumbents in the classification may not perform all of these tasks or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.
- Provide dispatch function, dispatching district police and security personnel and off-duty sheriff deputies operating a two-way radio system to communicate with and monitor law enforcement activities. (E1)
- Maintain officer response records and record service call information. (E1)
- Receive and process telephone incident reports and requests for security/law enforcement related services; conduct telephone interviews with individuals reporting incidents/crimes, triage and prioritize calls for appropriate action. (E1)
- Coordinate office communications; initiate and answer telephone calls; screen and route calls; respond to inquiries and provide technical information related to office programs, schedules, activities, policies and procedures; resolve issues as appropriate. (E1)
- Communicate with other departments, District staff and outside organizations as necessary, to coordinate activities and exchange information; assure smooth and efficient office operations. (E2)
- Department of Justice certification for clearance to use computerized systems, such as NCIC (National Crime Information Computer) and CLETS (California Law Enforcement Teletype Systems). (E2)
- Receive and resolve complaints or refer to appropriate personnel. (E2)
- Operate and drive vehicle in support of essential duties; observe legal and defensive driving practices. (E3)
- Compliance with NCLB (No Child Left Behind) safe school regulations. (E3)
- Ensure compliance with FCC (Federal Communications Commission) regulations and divisional policies. (E3)
- Compile information and prepare and maintain a wide variety of data and reports according to established procedures and time lines; process a variety of forms and applications pertinent to the assignment.
- Assist with maintaining Police Records to include police reports, evidence logs and various division records and files; sort, file and purge materials according to established procedures; release information from files to authorized personnel and outside agencies as appropriate.
- Operate a two-way radio and related security communications equipment.
- Operate a variety of office equipment including a fax machine, copier and a computer and assigned software.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
A. Graduation from High School or equivalent. Associates Degree preferred.
B. Three years of clerical or secretarial experience involving frequent public contact and one year of law enforcement dispatch experience. General telephone operator, transportation dispatcher, or military experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis. PRC (Police Resource Computer) computer aided system experience preferred.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- A certificate stating freedom from Tuberculosis.
- P.O.S.T. Dispatcher course. Completion required within 6 months of employment.
- Department of Justice certified CLETS course. Completion required within 6 months of employment.
- A valid California Drivers License.
- Current DMV printout.
- Insurable by District liability insurance carrier.
- Valid First Aid Certification.
- Valid CPR Certification.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Modem office practices, procedures and equipment.
- Operation of a computer and assigned software.
- Terminology, processes and operations of assigned office or program.
- Financial record-keeping techniques.
- Telephone techniques and etiquette.
- Applicable laws, codes, rules and regulations related to assigned activities.

ABILITY TO:
- Stay current with all laws and regulations relating to essential duties including but not limited to: topic specific seminars, training and conferences.
- Attend yearly refresher training at the start of every school year at District expense.

- Operate desktop computer, including word processing, spreadsheets, database and police software.
- Type/keyboard 55 words per minute net.
- Meet schedules and timelines.
- Maintain work pace appropriate to given workload.
- Organize and file various reports and documentation pertaining to police and legal system operations.
- Operate local and national computers.
- Make sound judgments in urgent and emergency situations.
- Speak in a clear and concise manner.
- Learn standard broadcast procedures and FCC rules regarding law enforcement transmissions.
- Learn radio codes used by local law enforcement agencies.
- Read and interpret area maps and identify geographic locations.
- Dispatch and coordinate communications and personnel as necessary.
- Assure efficient and timely completion of office and program projects and activities.
