INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT II, SPECIAL EDUCATION

Under general direction, and in addition to the duties identified in the Instructional Assistant, General Education and Instructional Assistant I classifications, independently performs and may oversee a variety of skilled work in Special Education. Performs all of the necessary duties and responsibilities listed below and demonstrates a high level of competency in multiple skill areas and has the ability to support the instructional program for Special Education students on the moderate/severe continuum; however, requires less knowledge than the duties in the Behavior Support Specialist level.

• Participates in appropriate behavioral intervention trainings, when necessary, and applies strategies when appropriate
• Participates in and provides information during team and program meetings
• Communicates regularly with other team members
• Monitors students during snacks and lunch, and while on playground during recess and lunchtime; accompanies students to physical education instruction and other mainstream classes as assigned to assist the instructor; instructs students in playground sports
• Attends and participates in training for medical procedures as appropriate and required by the IEP or other health plan, and apply training with assigned students
• Supports special needs students by assisting in medical procedures, as directed by the teacher, physician and District Nurse in emergency situations (e.g. blood sugar testing, administer insulin, injections, medication, and catherization); monitors and protects students during seizures
• Monitors students as they arrive and leave school and waits for buses and parent transportation; assists students in getting on and off the bus, walks with children to class, library, office and cafeteria
• Supports special needs students by assisting with mobility and physical needs by performing tasks such as pushing a wheel chair, carrying belongings, removing and putting on clothing, tying shoes, feeding, lifting student after falling, guiding hands and feet, participating in games, and playing on playground equipment
