Job Description

 

SUMMARY: Under the direction of an assigned supervisor or lead, independently develops original design concepts, manages electronic files and storage management, produces art for the web, provides technical expertise regarding design and marketing concepts and trends, techniques and solution approaches to administrative personnel, foundation members, faculty, staff and students. Schedules outside vendors and suppliers; analyzes costs, budgets and time estimates. Plans and prepares a variety of finished artwork for instructional and promotional purposes and for the college and the district. Provides graphic presentations; assists in staff training, and maintains a current understanding of design trends.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

Plan, design and prepare finished artwork using a variety of media including Macintosh computer equipment and software, technical illustrations, pen and ink, berol markers, pastels and other media. Designs and prepares original logos, drawings, technical illustrations, graphs, computer generated illustrations, cartoons and typography; designs and schedules interior and exterior signs.

 

Originates and coordinates production of instructional and promotional projects for the administration, foundation, community college district, faculty, staff and students.

 

Schedules and coordinates simultaneous projects which include: photo shoots, copywriting, printing, signage and graphic design.

 

Meet with outside vendors and suppliers to discuss job specifications for projects as directed. Obtain cost and time estimates to complete project.

 

Maintains job and scheduling logs; electronic archiving of files, electronic projects files and storage management, digital retouching and reformatting, monitors project status and progress to assure the timely and efficient completion of quality work.

 

Determines appropriate type size, font, and style for graphics projects; designates line length, line spacing and justifications; specifies paper grade, inks and binding as needed.

 

Utilize design elements and principles such as color, shape, composition dominant image and spatial relationships to develop and design instructional and promotional materials.

 

Consult with faculty, staff and students and provide technical expertise regarding graphic design, methods of reproduction and artistic presentations.

 

Operate a variety of specialized equipment including a Macintosh computer, drafting machines, scanner, printer, and a variety of art tools.

 

Determine appropriate type size, font, and style for graphics projects; designate line length, line spacing and justifications; specify paper grade, inks and binding as needed.

 

Design cover art and contents of brochures, catalogs, pamphlets and promotional materials; design and prepare interior and exterior signs.

 

Obtain cost estimates from vendors and suppliers; order required materials in accordance with established purchasing procedures; prepare estimates of time and materials as required.

 

Maintain current knowledge of graphic design trends and technological equipment advances for area of assignment.

 

Prepare and maintain basic records related to the status and progress of graphics projects.

 

Utilize design elements and principles such as color, shape, composition, dominant image and spatial relationships to develop and design instructional and promotional materials

 

Determine project requirements and purposes; provide technical expertise and advice regarding graphic design solutions.

 

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:

 

Train and provide work direction to part-time staff; provide technical and design guidance to Creative Services Support Specialist.

 

Consult with the faculty in the development of classroom related materials. To create promotional items used by faculty to help fill their classes.

 

Attend job-related courses and seminars to maintain state-of -the-art technological knowledge, as applied to graphic marketing for a the college and district.

 

Maintain departmental area(s) in a safe, clean and orderly condition; assure compliance with established safety procedures and regulations.

 

Perform related duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

 

• Methods, equipment and materials used in graphic arts and design including Macintosh computer and appropriate graphics software (e.g. QuarkXpress, Illustrator, and Photoshop), typography, art tools, cameras, scanner, printers, etc.

• Printing processes and equipment used in graphic design.

• Knowledge of printing techniques, paper, technical processing and computer manipulation

• Job scheduling logs;

• Electronic archiving of files, electronic project file and storage management;

• Digital retouching and reformatting;

• Typography, type measuring systems, typestyles, x-heights, letter spacing, kerning, word leading and spacing, preparing manuscripts, copy-fitting, proof correction, layouts, picture and photo preparation, color correction. Equipment and materials used for graphic design including Macintosh computer and appropriate graphics software.

• Grid systems, golden mean, line length eye tracking, producing and designing master pages, column widths and depts, appropriate trim sizes, line lengths, folios, margins, heading positions, bleeds, gutters and folios.

• Reproduction techniques, color separations, halftones, duotones, tri-tones, color tints, letterpress, lithography, screen printing, offset, color copier, thermography, die-stamping procedures, embossing, bar relief, engraving, scoring, folding, stitching, binding, color properties of CMYK and RGB.

• Color reproduction, 4-color process, color correction, color proofing, color matching systems, match prints, Dupont Chromalins, 3M Color Keys, dot registration, dot gain, traditional and stoastic screens, color reduction and addition.

• Digital and traditional photo preparation for printing, photo scaling, photo aspects ratios, photo lighting for print, scanning reflective art and transparencies, photo enlargement / reduction calculating

• Selection of paper types (text, offset, book, newsprint), qualities, weights, paper grain, surfaces and finishes (linen, velvet, satin).

• Picture research, online picture agencies, disk based image libraries, rights managed vs. royalty free, rules of copyright and the regulations covering it, commissioned artwork and work-for-hire.

• Electronic project file and storage management;

• Digital retouching and reformatting;

• Use of Pantone, PMS and Pantone Goes color matching systems, color relationships, positive / negative space.

• Understanding of College Graphic Standards manual, Publication protocols, and the College Mission Statement.

 

ABILITY TO:

 

• Create designs and prepare drawings, illustrative materials, posters, etc. using a Macintosh computer and appropriate graphics software, including QuarkXPress, Illustrator, Photoshop and others.

• Maintain job and scheduling logs;

• Electronically archive files;

• Develop and organize ideas concerning design and presentation;

• Utilize principles and elements of design including color, shape, spatial relationships, composition and dominant image;

• Ability to communicate with and present design solutions to all levels of personnel;

• Plan, organize, assist in the development of and prepare finished artwork for instructional and promotional materials;

• Prepare estimates of time, materials, processes and equipment used in graphic production; maintain records;

• Determine appropriate type size and style, spacing, paper and inks for various instructional and promotional projects;

• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing;

• Monitor project budget;

• Train and provide work direction to others;

• Ability to understand needs and respond with creative design solutions.

• Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others;

• Follow departmental policies and procedures;

• Ability to meet schedules and timelines;

• Work independently with little direction.

 

EDUCATION: Two years of college-level course work or equivalent with specialized training in art and design or related field and working knowledge of and experience with current software and tools used in the industry. (e.g. software, removable hard drives, scanners, etc). B. A. in Graphic Design/ Communication preferred.

 

EXPERIENCE: Three years of demonstrated field experience with increasingly responsible experience in graphic design / communications using a variety of graphic techniques and methods.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS: Graphic design office environment subject to lifting and eye strain from computer use.
