COMPUTER SUPPORT TECHNICIAN
DEFINITION
Under general direction, performs a variety of duties related to District-wide operation of computer systems and networks; programs and modifies microcomputer applications and provides microcomputer support; assists as needed in daily operations of Education and Information Technology Departments; performs general office, clerical and recordkeeping tasks; and performs related work as required. This classification is responsible for assisting the Administrator of Education Technology in maintaining District network computer, voice and data systems and other computer-related operations within the District. It is differentiated from other support positions in that a high degree of computer literacy, independent decision-making, and the ability to train staff and resolve problems is required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
· Trains, supports, and assists District staff on the proper operation of the District computer systems.
· Receives calls and other notice of problems, and identifies and solves such problems.
· Travels to sites around district as needed.
· Performs computer and peripheral equipment installations, repairs and maintenance.
· Sets up, installs, replaces and maintains computers and related equipment, including remote communication hardware and software.
· Installs, maintains and modifies LAN and WAN software applications.
· Provides technical support and training to staff for computer operations and applications, including the installation of new hardware and software.
· Supports the District’s connection to the Riverside County Office of Education for fiscal/purchasing and purchasing programs.
· Supports the District’s student data library and networking systems.
· Maintains the computer network by adding or deleting users, backing-up records as needed, and related maintenance tasks.
· Prepares and maintains required records and reports (for example: training documentation, equipment inventory, passwords, licenses, work orders, etc.).
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
· Works with maintenance and contract personnel as needed when cables or phone lines are installed.
· Interacts and communicates with District and external network systems personnel, including vendors.
· Orders parts, tools, software and other equipment.
· Plans, evaluates and recommends new networking and computing resources.
· Performs other related duties as required.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Principles and practices of installation and operation of data communication systems and equipment;
Concepts and specifics relating to use of Macintosh and IBM clone/compatible microcomputers;
Appletalk, Ethernet, Microsoft and Novell networks;
Windows NT 4.0, Windows 9x and 2000, Mac OS 7.0+
Basic installation, operation, repair and maintenance of microcomputer systems;

Microcomputer office and internet software;
General office practices and procedures.
Ability to:
Provide technical support and training for District’s LAN/WAN staff;
Describe technical problems to field service technicians to determine appropriate action;

Develop systems, logs, or procedures to monitor critical functions;
Learn school district operations related to the above duties;
Advise and guide District employees relating to use of hardware, software, and related tasks;
Solve problems quickly;

Read and understand handwritten or typed documents, instructions, the display screen or various equipment and machines, and blueprints and schematics;

Experience and Education:
Graduation from high school supplemented by coursework related to computer network technology, and four years responsible experience installing, repairing, and maintaining microcomputers and peripheral equipment, including networking systems. A+ Certification is desirable.
