Job Summary

Job Summary

The San Diego County Office of Education is seeking individuals to join our team as Outdoor Education Interns for the 2022-23 season at the original 6th Grade Camp, Cuyamaca Outdoor School. The residential outdoor education program, in operation since 1946, is located an hour east of San Diego in the 25,000-acre Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, elevation 4,000 feet. We connect children to science through nature in a weeklong, hands-on outdoor education experience. Our interns are outgoing, hard-working, energetic, and have a genuine desire to make a positive difference in children’s lives.

The position places a strong emphasis on environmental education.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of college-level course work in natural sciences or other related topics.
  • Previous experience working in a residential outdoor education or recreation program with school-age children.
  • WFA/WFR/Lifeguard Certification preferred.
  • At time of hire, a valid CA driver’s license, fingerprint and background clearance, and negative TB test.
  • Must be available to take first aid and CPR training in September 2022 or have valid certification.
  • Knowledge of natural and environmental sciences
  • Works effectively with students and adults in small and large group settings.
  • Has a passion for teaching in and about the natural world.
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude, adaptable personality, strong work ethic, and likes to have fun!

Interns may be expected to participate in hiking up to five miles per day in all weather conditions.

              $15.50/hr. Overnight and weekend housing, meals (when school is in session), paid training, worker’s compensation, AEOE conference, paid time to visit another environmental education program, live and work in the beautiful 25,000 acres of the Cuyamaca Rancho State Park with other awesome educators!

              To be considered for this position, each section of the application must be complete. You must also complete all supplemental application questions on the application - the answers will be used to evaluate your qualifications for this position. Candidates who do not provide complete information may be eliminated from consideration. Emailed or Faxed supplemental documents will not be accepted. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

              It is important to note to become a substitute/limited-term employee, there will be a fingerprinting requirement that currently costs $77 (this is an up-front, out-of-pocket cost). In addition, if you apply and are selected for a permanent position at any point there would be an additional $77 cost (currently) for fingerprinting as a permanent employee (taken out of your first regular paycheck).
