The San Diego County Office of Education is accepting applications for Campus Youth Advocate on a continuous basis for PERMANENT and SUBSTITUTE assignments. The Campus Youth Advocate ensures school safety by supporting an effective school climate through positive behavioral support: monitoring the school campus and adjacent property to ensure school security and student safety while classes and activities are being conducted; assists pupils in resolving conflicts in a positive and constructive manner through use of conflict resolution strategies, mediation techniques, and restorative justice practices; and participates in the training of pupils and staff such practices. SDCOE is building our permanent pool for part-time and full-time vacancies. This recruitment will be used to establish a six-month eligibility list to fill any vacancies in this classification. Permanent positions are eligible for health benefits. SDCOE is also building our substitute/limited-term pool for Campus Youth Advocate with individuals who prefer to work on an on-call, as-needed or limited-term basis. Substitute assignments are paid on Step 01 of the Classified Support Salary Schedule ($18.14/hr) and are not eligible for health benefits. Substitutes will need to successfully pass an examination and will be placed on the eligibility list.

This position requires possession of a high school diploma (or equivalent) and at least one year of experience (paid or volunteer) working with youth in an organized setting, ideally with at-risk youth.

Candidates must also demonstrate Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA, previously referred to as the NCLB Act) compliance. In order to satisfy the paraprofessional requirements of the ESSA, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent; AND,
  • Completed at least 48-semester units at an accredited college or university; OR,
  • Obtained an associates (or higher) degree; OR,
  • Successful completion of an assessment, administered by the San Diego County Office of Education, in basic reading, writing, mathematics skills, and the ability to assist with instruction.

Employment with the San Diego County Office of Education is contingent upon successful completion of a post-offer background check and physical exam, which includes a drug and alcohol screening.

          It is important to note to become a substitute/limited-term employee, there will be a fingerprinting requirement that currently costs $77 (this is an up-front, out-of-pocket cost that must be paid in the form of a money order or cashiers check). In addition, if you apply and are selected for a permanent position at any point there would be an additional $77 cost (currently) for fingerprinting as a permanent employee (taken out of your first regular paycheck).

          The ESSA exam will be administered by the SDCOE HR office and offered (virtually) twice a month.
