JOB DESCRIPTION
Title: Student Support Specialist
 Reports To: Coordinator, Student Support Services
Salary: Range 44 
Classification: Classified
FLSA: Non-Exempt (hourly) 
Work Year: School Term- 182 days
Board Ratified: 3/12/15
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the supervision of the Coordinator of Student Support Services, performs the necessary duties and functions to
assist with the mental health and social needs of students.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
? Implements the district’s standards-based counseling program at the school sites and develops activities and
resources to implement and evaluate the program, including but not limited to: Character development
strategies, peer relationships, coping strategies, effective social skills, problem-solving and conflict resolution.
? Provides individual and group counseling services to meet the developmental, preventive, and remedial needs
of students.
? Consults with students, parents, teachers, and other school/district staff to best meet the needs of students,
including but not limited to: Develop, maintain, and provide resources for students and families as needed,
provide in-class support and prevention education, and school crises intervention.
? Communicates with Mental Health Clinicians, School Psychologists/Administration, and Social Skill Facilitators
on best practices and individual student progress.
? Utilizes student information and data to assist with planning and program development.
? Adheres to ethical standards of the counseling profession, and abides by laws, policies, and procedures that
govern the schools. The Student Support Specialist also participates in trainings and professional
development to enhance knowledge and skills as needed or required.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of: Counseling/intervention strategies, stages of child/adolescent growth and development, cultural
competencies, and confidentiality and ethical standards.
Ability to:
? Identify and respond successfully to the challenges presented by today’s diverse student population.
? Support a wide range of student developmental needs in grades K – 6.
? Successfully work in a fast-paced environment.
? Commit to meeting student needs.
? Communicate and collaborate effectively.
? Balance the needs of multiple and diverse constituents.
? Continuously adapt to an ever changing environment.
? Develop and deliver grade/age appropriate character development lesson plans based on classroom and
individual student needs.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education: BA in Psychology or Sociology Preferred.
Experience: Counseling experience preferred (Group homes, foster care, school-based, etc.).

a classroom or while on the playground during lunch or recesses.
