GENERAL PURPOSE

Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of skilled, journey-level duties in the design, construction, installation, modification, maintenance and repair of electrical systems, machinery, motors, devices, controls, high and low voltage systems, and other related systems in District buildings and facilities; and performs related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Electrician is a full journey-level class responsible for performing a wide variety of skilled duties in the design, construction, installation, modification, maintenance and repair of electrical equipment, devices and systems, ranging from low voltage to 480 volts. Assignments vary, encompass a variety of tasks, seldom require detailed instructions, and require sound judgment and initiative.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.

  1. Inspects, repairs, installs, services and maintains electrical systems, including conduit and duct systems, lighting and power circuits, transformers, generators, control equipment, switches, and switchboards.
  2. Installs or replaces necessary interior and exterior wiring for equipment, appliances and lighting.
  3. Prepares cost estimates for repairs and orders materials in accordance with established procedures.
  4. Observes and complies with federal, state and local electrical codes.
  5. Operates a variety of tools and power equipment including saws, voltage tester, ohmmeter, multimeter and other maintenance tools and equipment.
  6. Works from sketches, plans, drawings, blueprints and specifications.
  7. Diagnoses and resolves difficult electrical problems; observes safety of others and recommends precautionary action while repairs are in progress.
  8. Provides work direction and guidance to other maintenance personnel as assigned to properly and safely complete work orders.
  9. Plans, implements and performs energy conservation measures to comply with state regulations.

OTHER DUTIES

  1. Assists other skilled maintenance personnel in cooperative assignments.
  2. Operates vehicles to travel to various District sites.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  1. National electrical and electrical safety codes of the Division of Industrial Safety and local electrical ordinances.
  2. Technical aspects of field of specialty.
  3. Basic electrical theory and calculation of formulas.
  4. Health and safety regulations.
  5. Record-keeping techniques.
  6. Materials, methods, tools and equipment used in electrical work.
  7. Carrying and maneuvering techniques for equipment that exceed one hundred (100) Ibs in teams or through the use of specialized equipment.

Ability to:

  1. Performs skilled electrical work in the repair, maintenance, alteration and construction of District buildings and facilities.
  2. Install, repair, service and maintain electrical systems and equipment.
  3. Make arithmetic calculations related to specialty quickly and accurately.
  4. Work from blueprints, shop drawings and sketches.
  5. Use a variety of tools and machines utilized in the basic trade.
  6. Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  7. Work independently with little direction.
  8. Analyze situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.
  9. Prepare cost estimates for electrical projects.

10.  Provide work direction to others.

Education, Training, and Experience:

  • Graduation from High School, G.E.D. certification, or completion of higher education, and

 

  • Two (2) years of journey-level experience in the electrical trade.

 

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:

 

  • A valid California Driver’s License.

 

  • Proof of automobile liability insurance coverage.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS

Listed below are examples of the physical aspects that this classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.

  • Lift, carry, push, pull, bend, twist, stoop, kneel, walk, run, and crawl.
  • Perform moderate to heavy physical exertion.
  • Lift 50 pounds.
  • Carry 25 pounds.
  • Reach in all directions.
  • Stand, sit and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Work at indoor and outdoor environment, with possible dry, cold, and wet weather, and temperatures ranging from freezing to 121 °F.
  • Work at different District sites of various configurations and sizes.
