ORANGE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT GARDENER/GROUNDSKEEPER DEFINITION Under general supervision performs roving maintenance and gardening work on school grounds and fields; performs grounds or athletic field maintenance; and does related work as required. Representative Duties Mows lawns and fields; trims shrubs, hedges, and trees; sprays flowers and shrubs with insecticides; waters lawns and fields; hoes weeds and rakes lawns; operates power mower and edger; operates a pickup truck in driving to various grounds areas; may be assigned to occasionally operate medium duty equipment, such as tractors, mowers, trucks, fork lifts; checks and services sprinkler systems; operates hand and power mowers and spray equipment; spades and otherwise prepares grounds around flowers and shrubs; does general grounds cleanup, including picking up paper and trash on grounds areas; assists in setting up for special events. Organizational Responsibilities Positions in this class report to a Lead Grounds Maintenance Worker, are assigned to work in roving capacity out of the central District yard. All assignments require independent responsibility in following prescribed methods and schedules. ENTRANCE QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE Training and Experience Good work history including one year of experience as Groundsman or Gardner. Knowledge and Abilities Good knowledge of: the basic methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in grounds keeping work; lawn sprinkling systems, safe working methods and procedures. Licenses A valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS: Heavy Work: Positions in this class perform work which involves the frequent lifting, pushing and/or pulling of objects which may approximate 75 pounds and may occasionally weigh up to 100 pounds. Mobility: Positions in this class require the mobility to stand, stoop, reach and bend; Positions in this class require mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects. Other Conditions: Incumbents may be required to work in inclement weather without effective protection from sun, cold and rain; Incumbents may be required to work with harsh or toxic substances; Incumbents may be required to work around foul odors; Incumbents may be required to wear protective apparel including goggles, face protectors, aprons, shoes and oxygen breathing apparatus.
