Under supervision of certificated staff, perform a variety of instructional and clerical duties related to the English Language Development Program. Duties will require the ability to translate and interpret both written and oral communications in English and Spanish.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Positions in this class are established principally to assist teachers with the instruction and assessment of English Language Learners. The Bilingual Facilitator is required to speak, read, and write Spanish in working with students designated as English Learners. The Bilingual Facilitator must be able to interpret effectively for Spanish-speaking parents. Bilingual Facilitators must work directly with students in the classroom, helping them to have full access to the curriculum by translating or interpreting the instructional material. The primary function of this position is to provide meaningful input for the students so that they will have successful grade-level experiences. Bilingual Facilitators must have strong academic skills and be able to express those skills in Spanish and English. Bilingual Facilitators must have good organizational skills, as they maintain the records for all English Learners. They must be familiar with testing procedures, and be willing to learn how to administer tests in English and Spanish.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Under the direction of certificated staff, listen to and assist students in reading, spelling, mathematics, and all other subjects according to instructions and guidance from a teacher; assist with assessments in English and Spanish; collect and assemble files; distribute resource materials; operate various office equipment such as a typewriter, computer, photocopy machine, and calculator; observe and record student performance as directed by the teacher or supervisor; review lessons and activities in Spanish and English; review a lesson in Spanish in order to provide meaningful input according to instructions from a teacher; perform related duties as requested.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of: the general needs and behavior of students; correct English and Spanish usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; the operation of standard office equipment; word and data processing on the computer.
Ability to: read, write, understand, and speak Spanish and English at an academic level; be an English language role model; establish and maintain effective relationships with adults and students; perform clerical work and maintain records; administer assessments; make arithmetical calculations with speed and accuracy; work with individual and small groups of students in the classroom; explain academic skills to students; understand and follow oral and written directions; use word processing programs and make entries in computer programs; operate standard office equipment.
Experience: Experience in working with students in a school setting.
Education: High school diploma or the equivalent required. Two years (48 semester credits) of college/university study at an accredited institution of higher learning is desirable.
