NUTRITION SPECIALIST

 

Description of Position

Under the direction of the Director of Food Services, develop, plan, and prepare menus and menu specifications to provide quality, nutritionally balanced meals in accordance with Federal and State laws and regulations; perform nutritional analysis; promote nutrition wellness and nutrition education programs within the District.

 

Essential Duties

  • Provide quality, nutritionally balanced meals according to dietary guidelines; complete nutritional analyses; recommend new and innovative menu items to introduce new foods to children; promote a varied diet and support nutrition promotions.
  • Develop, plan, and prepare menu specifications to provide quality, nutritionally balanced meals in accordance with Federal and State laws and regulations; create printed menus and online menus.
  • Conduct research and analyze data regarding nutritional adequacy and assure compliance with government regulations.
  • Ensure meals are provided to children with special dietary needs including food allergies and medical conditions; establish reporting and disclosure procedures to ensure proper oversight is being maintained and needs are met.
  • Develop, implement, administer, and evaluate District-wide nutrition education programs; provide nutrition training and education to faculty and Food Services staff, parents, and students; educate nutrition services supervisors and staff on nutrition.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Food Services to develop and implement District-wide nutrition policies; draft policies and administrative regulations.
  • Meet with school administrators, staff, faculty, and parents to discuss methods of creating nutritional school environments; recommend strategies to improve school meals and increase student participation.
  • Serve as a resource to District staff, parents, school nurses, and others regarding nutrition and health; respond to inquiries and provide information concerning programs, policies, and procedures related to health and nutrition.
  • Oversee the utilization of commodity foods; forecast needed products and track usage data; incorporate commodity foods into menus and menu specifications.
  • Discuss with manufacturer representatives or vendors, new or improved products, supplies, or equipment; oversee or conduct tests and demonstrations of products to determine quality and compliance with specifications.
  • Communicate with administrators, staff, Food Services management, outside agencies, and vendors to coordinate activities, resolve issues, and exchange information; drive a vehicle to various sites to conduct work.
  • Develop Food Services newsletter; update the Department’s web pages.
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of files, records, and reports related to assigned activities; including menu production worksheets, product specifications, and cost data reports; compose and distribute a variety of correspondence and materials.
  • Lead meetings and make presentations to promote new developments in food products and methods of food preparation and service.
  • Attend and participate in a variety of meetings, conferences, and trainings to maintain current knowledge of new or revised institutional food service methods and trends and evaluate them for potential application within the Food Services program.

  • Applicable laws, codes, rules, and regulations related to assigned activities.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in nutrition, dietetics, public health, or a closely related field.
  • Two years’ experience in school nutrition programs involving menu or nutrition event planning, nutritional analysis, and procurement of food items, supplies, and equipment.

 

Licenses and Other Requirements

  • Valid California driver’s license and use of a personal automobile.  An applicant for this class will be required to obtain, at his/her own expense, and submit his/her motor vehicle driving record at the time of appointment.  The record must meet and be maintained at the District’s safe driving record standard.  Failure to meet this requirement will result in the disqualification of the applicant.
